A celebration of His Holiness the Dalai Lama‏

Yesterday, it was my enormous privilege to see His Holiness the Dalai Lama at the Glastonbury Festival; the gasps of excitement when he appeared onstage with rock legend Patti Smith, and the crowd many tens of thousands strong singing "Happy Birthday to You" are memories that will last a lifetime.

On our website that is counting down 80 days until His Holiness’ 80th birthday on 6 July. For the last seven weeks International Tibet Network has been painstakingly building this tribute to His Holiness, a celebration of his life and work which also highlights the efforts of the global movement for Tibet.

Now there is just a week to go! Among those making exclusive birthday messages for the site are Nobel laureate Archbishop Desmond Tutu, international footballer Baichung Bhutia and Sikyong Dr Lobsang Sangay. El Dalái Lama (de la palabra mongola dalái, «océano», y de la tibetana lama, «maestro espiritual») es el título que obtiene el dirigente del Gobierno tibetano en el exilio y el líder espiritual del lamaísmo o budismo tibetano. El actual Dalái Lama es Tenzin Gyatso, llamado Kundun «la Presencia», nació el 6 de julio de 1935 en Amdo, Tíbet.  Es el XIV Dalái Lama, también llamado «portador del loto» líder religioso de la escuela Gelug del Budismo Tibetano.

 

Traducido generalmente como «océano de sabiduría», este título fue forjado por el jefe mongol Altan Khan al aceptar a Sonam Gyatso como maestro excepcional, «reencarnación de buda en la Tierra» alentando al pueblo mongol a la conversión al budismo vajrayāna . Nótese que en este caso, Dalay era la traducción de Gyam-tsho (Gyatso), el apellido de los Dalái Lamas.

  

 

En marzo de 2011 el Dalái Lama anunció que renunciaba a todos los cargos políticos que tenía en su poder del Gobierno tibetano en el exilio, para quedar sólo como líder espiritual y religioso.
